Field notes on scientific writing, proofreading, and the SciTypos that hide in plain sight.
As AI gets smarter, the headlines say neuroscience is finally cracking consciousness. We can find hidden awareness in a silent brain, we have theories that put a number on it, we are closing in. Some of that is true, and one part of it saves lives. But three very different achievements keep getting told as one story, and they answer three different questions. The first only detects consciousness. The second, the famous grand theory, spent 2023 being called pseudoscience by its own field. And the real hard problem, why any of this feels like anything, has not moved an inch. A five-minute read, no neuroscience needed.
